I LOVE safari rallies and cross country mud races and as usual my friends and their parents were planning to go for the rally-They invited me and I tagged along. Later, one friend's(Abbas- his leg was much better now) father was selected as one of the checkpoint managers as he was an ex-rally racer (or something like that). So instead of going to some roadside possition we got prime seats at the rally's most intense point. So, on the day of the rally we headed off to the checkpoint to set everything up. We had alot of fun there as we played and waited for the cars to begin arriving and saw alot of incidents where Abbas's father shouted at other wathcers coming and going for being on the road. We set up look out posts and climbed trees and even climbed and hung in odd possitions like upsidedown just to get a good look at the road from where they would turn off to come at full speed toward our checkpoint.
At last, we saw the first car (and it happened to be 15 minutes early than expected!) and watched it stop for the registration. then the driver told us that the other car that had been ahead of him and done a barrel roll and flown right in the roadside ditch. He said they had stopped to help and so were wondering whether any other racers had already passed through, all Abbas's father could say was no as the stop time was up and he had to move.
We watched a series of cars pass by and enjoyed the show of all the cars jumping and flying by before braking sharply for the cp. 17 cars had passed and 3 had crashed so that left 5 more cars.
We waiti=ed expectantly as 1 of the cars had one of the fastest drivers behind the wheel, and had apparently had gotten a blown tyre a leaking radiator and some other minor problems he had fixed his car temperarily and was on his way again. Soon we heard the now familiar rumble of the car approaching and watchied as it closed in on the cp. It was that very driver i had been talking about.(he surprisingly made in to the 4th positon at the end of the section of the race!).
As the next car aproached we noticed somthing unusual about the wheel and tried to get Abbas's Uncle's attention to ask him what was wrong( he was a mechanic). When he saw what we were pointing at he tried o warn the driver but the driver just thought he was supporting him. Abbas's father planned to tell the driver about the problem when he arrived (we had moved to a different position and so Abbas's uncle told Abbas's father the problem.) but as he zoom down towards the checkpoint and we watched from behind, something happpened......... he swurved suddenly of the path and then BANG!!! The car went spinnig and hit a tree head on. We all watched in fearful silence as the driver and the navigator were pulled out of the wreckage. Luckily they (somehow) they werent wounded seriously and watched thankfully as they got up and went over to the radio to report what had happened.
That was a very scary moment for all of us as none of us had ever seen anything so close. On the way back many of my friends got scared every time the driver sped up. In the end instead of going home and keeping away from anything to do with cars. Abbas and me went straight to the playstation 2 and said almost simultaneously , grinning broadly" I gotta try that out." We crashed the car in several different ways and almost replicated the same crash except this it wasn't scary it was awsome (wierd huh?).
Hehe! True story.
